| NAMIBIA ...The Country God made in anger... Namibia, formely known as South West Africa, borders onto South Africa (North), Angola (north), Botswana (east) and the Atlantic Ocean (west). Travelers beware: Namibia is not for skinflints and softies as it is quite often referred to as the country God made in anger... Most part of the country's landscape is very hostile, combined with soaring temperatures and both humans and animals adapted to survive. Along the coast we find the 80 million year old Namib desert and Coastal Plains. In the east we have the Kalahari desert and in between we find scrubby eastward sloping Central Plateau. In the north-eastern Kavango we have dense woodlands and the source of most of Namibia's water. Namibia has some of Africa's most diverse natural habitats. Elephants, rhinos and lions can also be found in the desert. At Cape Cross Seal Reserve there is a colony of 100 000 Cape Fur seals. Etosha National Park is also known for it's big variety of game. The temperatures also varies from well over 40 degrees Celsius in the Namib desert to a foggy 18 degrees Celsius at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund at the coast. Namibia has the highest kilometer of road per person in the world. The majority of the roads are of a gravel surface, which is quite practical due to the soaring temperatures, especially during December and January. Road maintenance is however a humongous task. |
